General location - orientation of SPI:


South Padre Island Texas is located in a North to South direction at the most southern tip of Texas just before the Rio Grande river meeting the Gulf.

It is a barrier Island separating the main land from the Gulf of Mexico

South Padre Island is like a pearl , tucked away in the Laguna Atascosa Wild Life Refugee which surrounds it .




The above trailer of the movie " Deep in the Heart " covers all of Texas but is an excellent documentation about our local wildlife.

Between South Padre Island and the main land is the Lower Laguna Madre - a shallow ( only 4-6 feet deep ), hyper-saline lagoon which is an excellent fishing ground.

On the island you have sunrise on the Gulf side and sunset on the Bay side ( keep this in mind if you want a romantic dinner or breakfast with your loved one).

Prevailing wind is South wind throughout the year ( mostly warm ) and during winter month a sporadic north wind ( can be freaking cold) - important to think about if you want to enjoy an extended stay in winter Hurricanes are the exception to the rule but happen only with a frequency of approximately 15 years between them.

There is only one access point to South Padre Island Texas ( at this point ) via Queen Isabella Causeway from Port Isabel, which on high tourist seasons will become bumper to bumper traffic.

The further away your hotel or condo is located from the bridge ( access point to island) - the longer your travel time to the main land ( main supermarket HEB or Walmart)

Reaching the island by rental car/car  or not?

Please keep in mind that South Padre Island is an Island - as such, parking is limited.

South Padre Island has on the Island a free shuttle service which comes every 15 minuets and is "hop on hop off" and even brings you to Port Isabel if you catch the right bus - scheduled and routes can be seen here

There are several beach access points on the island but each has an average car capacity of 15 cars.

Your best friend to get to the beach with your cooler, beach chair and boom box is the "radio flyer" with beach tires on it.

Once you are on the island and still believe you need wheels to get around check out "South Padre Island fun rentals" which are our tourist preferred way of exploring the island

and as you rent them only when needed - you are not stuck with a rental car which does not perform well on the beach in the first place, there are several locations throughout the island and most likely one near your hotel / condo / beach house,

remember - you go on vacation not to work so have fun and and if you feel like being  wild - do just that instead of being stuck in a "daily driver"

There are sufficient Taxis on the island which are kind of community Taxi and tend to be inexpensive for your ride no matter where you go on the island.

If you still believe you need a rental car - each airport will provide you with wheels but keep in mind your neighbor Elon Musk send his Tesla already in 2018 into space and enjoys the beach barefoot, good luck catching up to him.



Supermarkets on SPI

For the ones which are concerned to get enough paper towels and toilet paper to keep all the small ones clean,

there is a supermarket on the island and for the adults there are multiple liquor stores ,

if you let us know when you reserve your shuttle that you need to stop at either -

we can accommodate your wish for a stop over as long as your shopping is within a reasonable time frame.

It should be noted that liquor stores are closed on Sundays but you can purchase beer and wine in most grocery stores and gas stations after 12:00pm .
